If you’re driving this winter, be sure that you are aware of these 3 tips for safe winter driving in Maryland. Winter weather can put a damper on travel, and here in Maryland we see it all. Before you venture out, remind yourself of these three quick tips to keep you and your family safe when traveling.
- Check Your Vehicle – When traveling in the winter, the most important part of your vehicle is your tires. Before winter arrives, we suggest Marylanders put snow tires on their vehicle to be on the safe side. Before you head out on a trip, take some time to check your vehicle’s fluids, check that tires are full of air, and be sure wipers are working correctly. Lastly, clear your vehicle of ALL snow and ice as this can be a serious danger to other drivers.
- Prepare for the Worst – No matter what you do, the worst can still happen. Be sure you have prepared a winter emergency car kit with essentials in case your vehicle does break down. This could include things like water, warm clothes, food, a snow shovel, and other essentials for your family such as diapers for your baby or food for your pets. Lastly, be sure that your phone is fully charged and you have a back-up way to contact emergency services in case your cell phone fails.
- Drive Safely – Be sure to drive when the weather is favorable avoiding snow and ice storms. During the winter months, weather conditions can make roads that much more hazardous. Plan your route ahead of time and know where you are going, take your time, use your turning signals, start braking earlier than normal, and PLEASE do not use your phone while driving. If an accident does occur while driving in winter, be sure to call your local insurance agent in Maryland so they can help you with what to do next.
