Insurance can be complicated and difficult to understand. There are so many companies and coverage options that it can become overwhelming to think about. That’s why we’re providing you with the basics. Take a look at some of the basic things your auto insurance policy should cover.
Every auto insurance needs to have some level of liability insurance. This type of insurance covers bodily injury liability and property damage liability. Bodily injury liability insurance pays for expenses from injuries or death you cause and property damage liability insurance covers the costs to repair a vehicle or anything else you hit. In Maryland, the minimum required amount of liability coverage are:
- Bodily Injury Liability Coverage: $30,000 minimum per person / $60,000 minimum per accident
- Property Damage Liability Coverage: $15,000 minimum
Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
This type of insurance covers your medical expenses after an accident, regardless of who’s at fault. Maryland requires that you have a minimum of $2,500 coverage but allows you to wave PIP and choose a limited PIP option. Either way, you should look for auto insurance policies that include this because you don’t want to be stuck having to pay your medical expenses after an accident.
Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage
As the name suggests, this pays for the damage caused by drivers without car insurance or those who don’t have enough coverage to pay for the damage they cause. Like liability insurance, this type of coverage is broken down into two parts: bodily injury and property damage. Maryland requires that drivers have a minimum coverage of $15,000 for uninsured motorist property damage and $30,000 minimum per person/ $60,000 per accident uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage.
Although those are the only minimums Maryland law requires, if you want a “full coverage” car policy, it should include comprehensive and collision coverage. Comprehensive coverage covers the damage to your car that happens to your car when you’re not driving. Collision coverage covers the damage to your vehicle after a car accident, regardless of who’s at fault.
